# Cetaceans

Cetaceans are marine mammals belonging to the [infraorder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infraorder) **Cetacea** ([/sɪˈteɪʃə/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English)), a [secondarily aquatic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondarily_aquatic_tetrapods) clade under the order [Artiodactyla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artiodactyla) that include [whales](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale), [dolphins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin), [porpoises](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porpoises) and extinct groups such as [*Basilosaurus*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilosaurus). Most cetaceans live in marine environments, particularly the [pelagic zone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelagic_zone), but some reside solely in brackish or fresh water. Having a [cosmopolitan distribution](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmopolitan_distribution), they can be found in some rivers and all of Earth’s oceans. Many species migrate seasonally over vast ranges for food advantages.
